Austempered ductile iron (ADI): chemical composition
Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is ductile iron given an austempering heat treatment: austenitising followed by an isothermal hold in a salt bath, which produces an ausferritic matrix of acicular ferrite and carbon-stabilised austenite. It combines high strength with useful elongation and good wear resistance. EN 1564 defines the grades by mechanical properties; alloying with Ni, Mo or Cu is used to secure hardenability in heavier sections.
Gears, sprockets, crankshafts, suspension and drivetrain parts, and wear parts for agricultural, construction and rail equipment, often replacing forged or cast steel.
